Tell Congress and the Senate: Stop the “March to War” with Iran

The six month period for a  negotiated solution to the problem posed by concerns based on allegations of an Iranian nuclear weapons program begins on Monday, January 20.

Call Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Ed Markey and your Representative  by calling  855-686-6927 (855-68-NO-WAR*) toll free to tell them to speak out and vote against new sanctions for Iran.

Iranian hardliners are protesting the negotiated settlement, trying to undermine Iranian president Rouhani’s efforts for peace. At the same time,  pro-war senators are just eight co-sponsors shy of having enough votes to override a presidential veto promised Sunday by President Obama of their dangerous new Iran sanctions legislation. If that bill becomes law – perhaps even if it passes Congress without enough votes to over-ride a veto – it will torpedo the delicate negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.

Because of overwhelming public sentiment against another war in the Middle East, the war hawks are hiding their real aims – a fact that even administration spokespeople are calling out. Here’s Bernadette Meehan, National Security Council spokeswoman for the White House: “If certain members of Congress want the U.S. to take military action, they should be up front with the American public and say so.”

Pushback from the sick-of-war public is increasing. But it’s not yet clear that public antiwar pressure is enough to force even 34 Senators to support their own President’s diplomatic efforts, much less adopt the no-more-war, period stance of the current U.S. majority.  Senate Bill 1881 should never come up for a vote in the Senate. President Obama called it a “march to war”! This Wednesday the President held a lengthy meeting with the Senate Democratic Causcus in which he asked for their support.  Republican leadership in the House of Representatives is threatening to pass a House version of a sanctions bill to put pressure on the Senators supporting President Obama’s efforts to negotiate peace.

Contact both of our Senators and your Representative now at this crucial time  by calling  855-686-6927 (855-68-NO-WAR*) toll free and asking to speak to their offices. Tell them no new sanctions for Iran.  If you have called before, call now and urge them to speak out and join Senators like Dick Durban, Tim Kaine, Diane Feinstein, Barbara Mikulski and Connecticut’s Chris Murphy. in supporting the President’s position of no new sanctions.

Senators Markey and Warren are key to this battle.  They are each involved on important committees related to sanctions.
