On June 28, 2017, at Congressman Seth Moulton’s District Office in Salem, Massachusetts, there was meeting between his political aide, Morgan Bell and several non-profit organizations, which demonstrated what problems that needs to be open to the public. Some of the problems, which must be addressed are the lack of healthcare, the rise of climate change, and the increase of the United States military budget. Throughout this meeting, a multitude of nonprofit organizations expressed the United States government must be aware of the damage it imposes on the American citizens and foreign societies. The meeting with Bell showed the importance of recognizing that which issues needs to be reformed in order transfer the country into a stable democratic state.
When the North Shore Coalition of Peace & Justice (NSCP&J) and First Salem Church discussed the lack of healthcare, it presented many individuals in the United States have a difficult time obtaining efficient healthcare. NSCP&J and First Salem Church proclaimed urban cities in Massachusetts do not have enough funds to provide medical care for the poor and immigrants. They also stated Congress’ new health care bill will raise premiums, which makes more people unable to buy health care. From this discussion, the organizations presented health care benefits is one of the biggest problems facing the American people and needs to be revise so it can improve the flawed health care system.
As for the discussion of climate change, the nonprofit organizations indicated a lot of new ideas to increase environmental security. During the conversation, the community groups talked about replacing power plants with solar panels and turbines. The organizations declared this plan can help reduce CO2 and create more green jobs for the American people. Another concept that was brought up was how the ice is rapidly melting at the Arctic, causing the rise of sea levels and increase of animal extinction. From these plans demonstrated ways to make the environment flourish.
During the meeting, the American government proposal of increasing the military budget is even mentioned a lot. NSCP&J stated Congress proposed to escalate the military budget to more than sixty percent; and Congress plans to make this proposal happen by defunding other programs, including education, housing, medical research, and renewable energy industries. The coalitions are strongly against this proposal and questioned Moulton’s stance on this issue. We learned that Moulton supports strengthening the military defense, but believes the budget needs to be lower than the actual cost. The organizations declared if the American government approves this plan it gives the Trump Administration the power to conduct more wars and use this advantage to conquer other states.
The meeting with Moulton’s aide revealed many of these political issues have been presented to the government, so elected politicians can recognize their main priority is to protect the people. The organizations showed the government actions are having a negative impact on human rights and liberties. Overall, the coalitions information about the American political issues strongly encouraged the people and the government to develop ways to make the public become civilize.
