Since Ed Markey was elected to the Senate, a special election will be held to replace him in the House of Representatives in the 5th Congressional District. The primary will be on October 15, 2013 and the final election on December 10, 2013.
Massachusetts Peace Action endorses Carl Sciortino in this election. Sciortino is the only candidate in the race who takes consistently pro-peace positions on the tough issues like peace with Iran and Israel-Palestine. When Congress was debating war with Syria in early September, Sciortino was the first in the field of candidates to declare his opposition to a military strike, and he then spoke out at our “No War with Syria” rally in downtown Boston on September 9. At the Progressive Voters Forum September 12, Sciortino alone criticized the House of Representatives’ vote to apply more sanctions on Iran. Sciortino is the House sponsor of the Peace Action-supported Budget for All legislation in the State House, which would fund human needs, create jobs, tax corporations and higher incomes and cut the military budget.
