An Appeal to the Massachusetts congressional delegation

John KerrySenator John Kerry is a member of Congress’ “Super Committee”, which is tasked with proposing by November 23 how to cut the 10-year Federal deficit by $1.5 trillion.  People who have talked with Kerry fear that he will cut Social Security, healthcare, and other programs we need. We must act now to keep him from doing that.

Kerry has set up a meeting this week to get input from Massachusetts Members of Congress.

Call your Representative’s office at (202) 224-3121 on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday of this week. Or send your Representative an email using our online form. Ask him or her to tell Kerry: stand firm against cuts in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid  and insist on real solutions instead. (To find out who your representative is, fill in your zip code at http://www.house.gov/.)

There are real solutions and they were proposed and documented in the Congressional Progressive Caucus’s People’s Budget last April:

1) Ending the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and cutting the outsized military budget by 25% would save more than the required $1.5 trillion.

2) Ending the Bush tax breaks on income over $250,000, as Obama promised to do when he ran for President, would bring in $700 billion.   Taxing millionaires, billionaires, and capital gains and higher rates, as proposed recently by Warren Buffet, would help even more.

We can cut the deficit even more than the Supercommittee is supposed to – and not touch programs that we use. This is the message Kerry must hear.
