2012 Endorsements
Massachusetts Peace Action endorses Rep. Jim McGovern and Rep. John Tierney for re-election to the House of Representatives. Donate to their campaigns!
A constant ally of Peace Action, Jim McGovern is a tireless and effective legislative leader for a range of peace issues. He is a key leader in Congress of the effort to end the disastrous Afghanistan war and bring our troops home quickly. His amendment to the defense authorization bill, which would have required an accelerated Afghanistan withdrawal, came within 10 votes of passing the House of Representatives in May 2011; the Republican leadership has prevented similar language from coming to the floor in 2012 for fear it would pass.
John Tierney introduced legislation in 2008 that led to the creation of the Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan which examined allegations that billions of dollars had been misappropriated. He has consistently opposed funding for the Afghanistan war and voted in favor of cuts to the military budget. Rep. Tierney is a longstanding opponent of missile defense systems.
Both are members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Rep. McGovern is a supporter of its Budget for All, which Mass. Peace Action and our allies have put on the November ballot in districts across Massachusetts in a non-binding referendum. We urge our members to support their campaigns by donating through the Peace Action donation page, which lets the campaigns know that Peace Action supporters gave the donations.
